Background & National Context
According to projections from the Malawi National Statistical Office (NSO), Malawi’s population was estimated at approximately 21.7 million in 2024, with figures expected to exceed 22 million by mid-2025, reflecting continued growth from the 2018 census population of 17.6 million.
More than half of the population is under the age of 18, highlighting the urgent need for child-focused health and social protection services. UNICEF’s 2024 report on child challenges in Malawi noted that children continue to face severe health and nutrition challenges driven by rapid population growth, climate change, and economic hardship. More than 62,000 children under five were reported to be at risk of severe acute malnutrition due to prolonged droughts, flooding, and increasing food insecurity.
Butterfly Collaborative Malawi continues to respond to these challenges by supporting neglected and abandoned children and food insecure communities through medical outreach, nutrition support, disease treatment, cervical cancer screening, counseling, and social work services. This report summarizes the organization’s 2025 activities and highlights stories of healing, recovery, and hope.
